Speed-retouch | Self Portrait

Every photographer has their own process. Mine has very little to do with the actual photography part. I like to spend as little time in-camera as possible, and make the real magic happen in post.  I wanted to show the progression of a single photo from start to finish, so I made a time-lapse screen capture of my editing over the course of several hours (condensed to 3 minutes for your viewing). Enjoy!

I treat a photo like a half-finished painting: softening every detail, painting in the shadows and highlights, adjusting every colour accent, and overlaying gritty textures. Here is a before & After look:

I understand that some photographers would prefer the original, raw version of this photo. But art is just an opinion, isn’t it? Thanks for reading!

Self-Portrait | Lavender

I felt a spark of creativity last night and decided to set up the studio for a self portrait. It’s been a while since I used my camera for something creative and personal and I was excited to use some outfits from long lost shoots. I had a really great time editing this photo and actually made a time-lapse video of the edit process, which I’ll share here shortly.

Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley of the Incas

Our third day in the Cusco region was amazing. We traveled through the sprawling mountains of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, visited Ollantaytambo (a small town at the base of an old military stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance), and we watched a wonderful demonstration of the colour dying process for Alpaca sweaters in Chinchero.  This shot was taken in Ollantaytambo.

Off to Peru

So tomorrow I embark on another adventure, this time with my parents and my long-lost travelling sister! I couldn’t be more excited to go out into the world again after a relatively dull winter. Dust has been accumulating on my camera for a few months now and it’s about time I had some amazing experiences to document with it, and share with you here! We’ll be visiting Cusco and Lima, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. I can only hope that I’ll get some breathtaking photos of the landscapes, history and culture there : ) Stay tuned for pictures!

Wearer of many hats

I was excited to finally set up a studio space in the corner of the apartment. I snapped a few quick pictures of me and some objects I use on the daily, and this was the strange, but kind of cool, result. I was inspired by the American Ultra posters, and did not intend for this to be representative of anything religious. I didn’t really plot it out, but now I’ve decided that there are 6 symbolic references in this photo. Colored pencils (art), harmonica (music), journal (writing, expression), camera (work), pipe (leisure), Pippin (love, family) and the Temperence Tarot card (balance and will-power). I also added a moon because, well I’m just more of a moon person.

My Top 5 European Food Adventures

Pesto Pasta in Venice
This pasta blew my actual mind. We like to think our American-style Italian food is pretty spot-on, but not one Italian that I met on my travels knew what “Alfredo” pasta was.  So I tried an authentic Italian dish, cooked with the absolute minimum ingredients; just oils, pesto and spices. Simple and delicious. Tip: Even better with an italian Bellini, a drink based with Prosecco sparkling wine and peach nectar, which originated in Venice as well!

Magnum Ice Cream Bar in Holland
Magnum Ice Cream is available at any convenience store in Canada, with a big price tag. The price tag isn’t any smaller in Holland, but the options are infinite! You pick your ice cream, you pick your coating, you pick your toppings! Whole strawberries, fudge drizzle, peanut butter. Anything!  It’s the magnum version of make-your-own fro yo. An amazing treat that you will definitely regret passing up.

The Festival of Lights

I was lucky enough to get an invite to the Diwali Festival event in Halifax to take some photos last night. Diwali (the festival of lights) is a cultural holiday in India that spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The event was absolutely beautiful- awesome dancing and yummy food. Happy Diwali!
